Gemeinde Seckau

The market town of Seckau is located in the south of the Seckau Alps and also gave its name to the Niedere Tauern mountain range.

The importance of Seckau im Murtal is mainly due to the Benedictine Abbey of Seckau. This was founded in 1140 as an Augustinian monastery and the basilica and the monastery are still a magnet for people today.

Embedded in the foothills of the Niedere Tauern, the market town of Seckau lies on a high plateau with its well-known Benedictine abbey. The monastery was already founded in 1140 as an Augustinian monastery. In the Middle Ages, not only did the bishop of the Seckau diocese have his seat here, but the canons were also known for their illuminations, which were made in the writing workshops at the time. From August 21st to 23rd, 1660, Emperor Leopold I visited Seckau and gave it the right to hold markets.

Here you can also discover very special excursion destinations: such as the Weiermoarteich, the Schachenkirche or the Tremmelberg.

For culinary lovers, there is the Hofwirt, who spoils his guests in a wonderful ambience, and the sweet temptations of the Regner pastry shop.
