The Murtaler Steirerkäse is very typical in our region and shapes the culinary offer of the region in various forms!
The Murtaler Steirerkäse is a cut-proof cooked cheese, which was originally produced by many farms for their own use. The cheese is made from specially matured lean pots. Spices (caraway, salt, pepper), table salt and milk are added to the curd cheese. This gives the Murtaler Steirerkäse its typical hearty, spicy taste.
Some direct marketers further refine it by adding butter and adding the "crumble cheese" (the seasoned curd cheese). If you discover white dots (eyes), these are the pieces of crumbly cheese that are lifted underneath - a sign of real manual work. This snack cheese is considered a rustic regional specialty and should not be missing on any board snack, especially to be recommended with a slice of wood-fired bread.
