Traditions in Murtal

Life in the Mur Valley in the heart of Styria is still very much influenced by Christian and rural traditions, so numerous old traditons accompany us all year round.

If you have the opportunity to be on site at one of our traditional events, take advantage of it. Because here the traditions are still really alive.

The traditions are kept alive by regional associations or in part even by individuals, mostly been passed on from generation to generation. Only a few of these customs are actually events, most are simply lived in families or in local communities. It is therefore often the case that neighboring towns know little about the traditions of the neighboring village or it's background.

Of course there are numerous traditions in the Murtal, which are also known throughout Styria, others are really only in this region - such as the "Plague Candle Parade" in St. Benedikten, the "Gones Run" in St. Margarethen or the "Weisenbläsertreffen" at Sommerthörl.

In St. Margarethen there is even a local club, called "Stamm 1907" , which has set itself the goal of keeping numerous customs, dances and costumes of the region alive.
