Steirerkäse

Murtaler Steirerkäse is very typical of our region and characterises the region's culinary offerings in many different forms!

Murtaler Steirerkäse is a firm cooked cheese that was originally produced by many farms for their own use. The cheese is made from specially matured skimmed curd. Spices (caraway, salt, pepper), table salt and milk are added to the curd cheese. This gives Murtaler Steirerkäse its typical hearty, spicy flavour.

Some direct marketers refine it further by adding butter and folding in the "Bröselkäse" (flavoured curd cheese). If you spot white dots (eyes), these are the crumbly cheese pieces that have been folded in by hand - a sign of real handiwork. This snack cheese is a traditional regional speciality and should not be missing from any snack. Styrian cheese with a slice of wood-fired bread is particularly recommended.

It is not for nothing that the region has been the "Murtaler Steirerkäse Genussregion" for 10 years!

A tip - also a real treat when warm!
