Open
A wonderful hike with fantastic landscape backdrops and one or two places to linger.
Far away from the busy road, you can really enjoy the surrounding silence and nature. The hike offers fabulous panoramic views and also many alpine pasture residents grazing. However, you need to have some fitness and endurance.

More information

By car from Germany
From Munich via the A8 towards Salzburg. From Salzburg on the A10 Tauernautobahn to St. Michael im Lungau. On the B 96 to Tamsweg, then on the B 95 to Predlitz. The B 97 leads via Stadl/Mur to Murau. There at the roundabout towards St. Lambrecht to Murauer train station and further towards St. Lambrecht. Via Laßnitz near Murau you reach St. Lambrecht, which is already in the nature park. Continue towards Mariahof, then to Neumarkt, after Neumarkt and St. Marein turn left towards Mühlen. Follow the main road, then turn left to Mühlen. Turn right through the town center and follow the road to the Tonnerhütte.

Arrival from Eastern Austria/Hungary
At the motorway junction in St. Michael near Leoben, take the S 36 towards Klagenfurt. Past Knittelfeld and Judenburg to Scheifling. In Scheifling continue towards Klagenfurt to Neumarkt, via Unzmarkt and Perchau am Sattel you reach Neumarkt. Drive through Neumarkt and St. Marein, then turn left towards Mühlen. Follow the main road, then turn left to Mühlen to the town center. Turn right through the town center and follow the road to the Tonnerhütte.

Arrival from southern Austria/Italy
Via Klagenfurt on the S 37 past St. Veit/Glan, Treibach and Friesach. In Friesach continue towards Vienna, via Dürnstein and Wildbad towards Neumarkt. After the gorge and just before St. Marein, turn right towards Mühlen. Follow the main road, then turn left to Mühlen. Turn right through the town center and follow the road to the Tonnerhütte.

You start at the Tonnerhütte car park and follow the slightly ascending forest path to the first bend. Immediately from the bend, the footpath branches off to the right and turns towards the right edge of the ski slope. Follow the moderately ascending course of the slope and go past the mountain station of the lift to Hohe Hald. Out of the increasingly sparse tree line, the path now leads us slightly uphill over tree-free terrain towards the Zirbitzkogel, before it turns to the east (half right) and heads towards the Murtalblick at the Lavantseehöhe, 2,250 m.

Follow the ridge to the N (left), the marker 312 to the summit of the Zirbitzkogel. Just before the summit is the Zirbitzkogel refuge, which invites you to stop off. From the Zirbitzkogel refuge, follow the marker 320. You turn right and return to the Lavantseehöhe in a southwesterly direction on the connecting path.

Follow marker 312 south to the Fuchskogel, 2,214 m, and continue on the path, which always slopes slightly towards the south, over the ridge of the Zirbitzkogel to the Stoana hut, approx. 1,750 m. The path now leads easily from the idyllic Stoana hut rising over the “Streitwiesen” to the Judenburg Cross. On the south side of the Zanitzenhöhe, 1,841 m, the path leads to the St. Martiner Hütte.

Follow the forest path in a southwesterly direction until you reach the junction of the footpath to St. Martin am Silberberg. On the Kärnter Grenzweg you walk gently downhill through Hochwald to JH Gnos. On the access road you walk slightly downhill for about 3/4 km until it meets a gravel road in the valley area. Follow the gravel municipal road to GH Wieland or St. Martin am Silberberg.
